How to Improve Your Vocabulary for SSC/BANK Exams?

In every SSC and Bank written competitive exams (CWE), the English section has always played a decisive role. It is because it is prominent and compulsory in every exam and secondly every organization uses English Language as their mode of communication. Therefore, every candidate is tested for strong English linguistic as well as grammatical skills which primarily include Vocabulary usage. The candidates are tested in topics like Synonyms/Antonyms, Word-Pair relationship, Fill in the Blanks, Reading Comprehension, Cloze Test etc. While solving questions based on them, the student should have strong vocabulary and grammar base, so the importance of Vocabulary usage cannot be undermined. In Reading Comprehension section, it will help students follow the ideas conveyed by the author, which will also make impact on his reading speed. In professional life too, the knowledge of good Vocabulary will be an extra asset and catalyst for one’s career growth.

There are two basic methods of improving Vocabulary and they are regularly adding new words to your Vocabulary and the second is revising the meanings of words that have been learnt and added by you. 

Firstly, we will discuss the addition of new words and this addition has to be done on daily basis. The students should regularly add new words to their Vocabulary and should try to learn at least 3000 plus words before the exam. The learning has to be unending process and so you should start adding new words from the word go. The students should start reading informative articles from daily newspapers, magazines, books etc and try to figure and list out typical words from them. Thereafter, you should refer to dictionary for their meaning. There might be possibilities that a word may have many meaning and so students should understand the gist of the article read and try to figure out the accurate meaning of the word. After learning its meaning, the students should focus on its pronunciation and its usage in making sentences. In addition, do try to understand the origin of the word and try to figure out similar words or words with similar meaning. It will be an added bonus to your word-power. 

The second fundamental aspect of improvising Vocabulary is revising the meaning of words already learnt. It is very important because human brain has limited memorizing power and words might disappear from student’s memory easily. So, you should not get discouraged, if you forget the words and their meanings in the earlier stages. The proper mode of preparation is to revise the meaning of the words on a regular basis and this will help you in remembering words for years. So, the learning process has to be consistent and regular so that these words become part and parcel of your reading, writing and speaking English in your personal and professional life.

For revising the learnt words, you should try to develop a habit of reading lots of articles from magazines, newspapers, books etc, which are informative and are based on current affairs, politics, sports, literature, economics, banking etc. While reading so many articles, you will find many typical words which are commonly used and have great social relevance. If you are preparing for banking exams, you should also be a regular reader of economic newspapers (The Economic Times), websites (Money Control), which will keep you update on latest developments in financial and banking world. It will not only enhance your Vocabulary power but also be helping you to prepare General Awareness section, which is of great significance in every competitive exam. After short-listing words, try to use them in making sentences and try to speak them fluently. You should also try to use these words in any context like watching movie or cricket match, writing a letter, talking to friend etc. It will build your confidence and lift your morale to greatest heights.
